Labor Day has its roots in the American labor movement of the late 1800s, when many people worked long hours—often seven days a week—in factories, mines, rail yards and other demanding occupations. Workers began organizing for safer conditions, reasonable hours and fair recognition of their contributions.
The first widely recognized Labor Day celebration took place in New York City on September 5, 1882, when thousands of workers marched together in a public demonstration. Over the following years, the observance spread across the country. In 1894, Congress designated the first Monday in September as a federal holiday.
Today, Labor Day honors the generations of American workers whose knowledge, craftsmanship and determination built our homes, businesses, infrastructure and communities. It also reminds us that nearly everything we depend upon is made possible by someone’s labor.
May we continue to respect the dignity of honest work and appreciate the people who keep America moving forward.
