You’ve heard it a million times – your home is your castle; it’s most likely the most valuable asset you own.
There are many reasons that you sell a home
Maybe you are selling your home to move on to a new home because you desire a larger home for your family, or perhaps you want to downsize and simplify your lifestyle.
Maybe the reason you are selling is because of a divorce, a life change. Perhaps you are selling your parents’ home as part of an estate. Maybe the reason you are selling is because of an unfortunate economic crisis.
In all of these situations there is one thing that I think is important – privacy!
I do not think that your personal legal transactions should be broadcast to the world. I really don’t. I do not think it is my place to use your situation to gain attention in social media. I really don’t. I should not be taking pictures of you at the closing table and publishing it for all of the world to see. Yes, all of the world. Everyone. Not a good idea.
I have seen over the past few years a great many real estate professionals both in mortgage and real estate using a closing as a platform for promotion. Look, don’t get me wrong, if you want to have your picture taken at the closing table to send to your friends, family and everyone else in the world, I’m not going to stop you. Not at all. It is an exciting moment to get to that end goal, the finish line of the transaction.
But, before you do, stop for a minute and make sure you want this type of publicity. I certainly don’t think you need to offer it up as an advertising piece. So I won’t be asking you to.
Yes, your home is probably the single most valuable asset you have, and the one asset is your private life. We have enough information out there, and there will be plenty of time for the legal notices and public records to be changed and updated to reflect your transfer of real property.
Save your social media to cute dogs and cat pictures. It’s a safer bet!
