It’s Xeriscaping and it can be fabulous!
We live in the southwest and this means we have a great awareness for our water supply. The word “xeriscape” is from the Greek word ‘xeros’ which means dry. The term started to be used in the 1980’s to describe a form of gardening which could use plants that didn’t require a great deal of water, but could still be visually pleasing.
The Albuquerque Water Authority has created a handbook of plants and turf that are friendly to our environment and that can produce gorgeous blooms and shade. You can, by utilizing their recommendations and replacing your water thirsty plants with xeriscape plants, apply for rebates through their program. For more information on water conversation you can check out the Xeriscape Council of New Mexico website
